[- Character Information -]

Character Name: Michiru Kaioh / Sailor Neptune
Fandom: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Canon Point: Just after her death in the battle with Galaxia

Appearance: Michiru is a slender woman of average height. Her hair is a soft aquamarine color that falls in waves about her shoulders, her eyes a bluer variation of the same shade. She carries herself with poise and elegance almost always, enough so that most people who first meet her remark upon this. She's graceful and proper. She tends towards fashionable clothes -- when out of her Senshi uniform. She tends to smile often enough, but it's a calm sort of expression.

Personality:
Michiru comes across, most of the time, as being very composed and put together. There's sort of an air of sophistication about her that sets her apart from many of the younger senshi (though less so as time goes by and they grow older). She and Haruka both have something of a reputation -- for their mature personalities as much as the achievements in their particular fields of talent. Michiru often tends to act older than her actual age, though she also has been known to have her moments of silliness and pettiness (especially when jealousy comes into play, and then, especially surrounding Haruka and Haruka's attention). For the most part though, she is very intent on what she views as her duty and her responsibility. This is clear when she first appears and her attention is focused entirely on discovering what is going on with Mugen Gakuen. She feels somewhat responsible for not having stopped the threat present then before it made it to Earth -- a task that had been given to the outer senshis a lifetime ago. Since by the time they awoke in this lifetime the threat was already there, it was almost personal in nature that they needed to stop it.

Michiru (and the outer senshi in general) seem a bit more hard-edged than the inner senshi. They are willing to be even be a bit cruel to achieve these ends -- though that cruelty is for what they believe to be the greater good, and to minimize the number of people that are hurt. She does not have much tolerance for ignorance or weakness -- at least weakness that is a choice. She will protect people who cannot protect themselves, but she hates it when people refuse to recognize and achieve their own potential for strength. Again, this harshness comes from holding other people to the same high standard that she holds herself.

As an outer senshi, there is a history of isolation that seems difficult for Sailor Neptune to overcome. In the old days of the Silver Millennium, the outer senshi functioned as lone sentries in the outer edges of the solar system, to guard against threats that came from the universe beyond. When reborn into this life, Michiru is the first of the outer senshi to awaken to her true self and senshi powers. Though she seeks out and joins forces with Haruka/Sailor Uranus, the two of them operate independent of the other senshi, believing that the inner senshi really don't have the resolve and will to do what must be done, especially since it involves quite a bit of difficult decision making and the possible sacrifice of Hotaru. This resistance to being part of the team is definitely a weakness. It's difficult for Michiru to trust and rely on other people. This is nearly her downfall at certain points. Luckily throughout the series she does grow closer to those people around her and becomes a true part of the team, and dedicated to protecting the princess and the future.

However, once they do connect with the inner senshi and in particular with Usagi, that bond is exceptionally strong. They are dedicated to protecting the princess at the cost of their lives if that is what it will take. Michiru takes this very seriously. She wouldn't hesitate to lay down her life if that is what protecting the people and places that matter to her took. It may be bravery, but in a way, it's driven by fear too, of failure, of not fulfilling the duty that she has been entrusted with.

For a young woman, Michiru has a lot on her plate -- as do most of the senshi, for that matter. She is the, so far as it seems, the only senshi reborn on Earth who awoke in her new life entirely on her own without the aid of cat nor other senshi. The solitude is something that she seems to grapple with, though she holds quite tightly to the bonds that she does make with people, especially those who share a similar duty to her own.

That said, despite her sometimes hard edges, Michiru is a kind and caring soul. She cares deeply for her friends -- especially for Haruka. She also becomes quite close to Hotaru and Setsuna, especially in a brief stint of living quiet, normal lives that the four share. In this brief time, Michiru is able to explore a side of herself that is often shut out in the continuing battles and dangers that the senshi need to intervene and protect the world from. She basically becomes something of a maternal figure to the reborn Hotaru, teaching music lessons and taking care of the little girl and living quite happily with Haruka and Setsuna. There's a lightness and a happiness in Michiru in this time, but when another threat surfaces and they're needed once more, she doesn't hesitate to step back into the role of Sailor Neptune, not even hesitating before accepting her responsibilities. She is not selfless; she has her selfish desires and is fully aware of them, but she also places a great value on her duty to protect. If left solely to her own wishes, she'd likely indulge herself in pursuing her passion of music.

Despite the fact that she projects a rather independent air, it is largely because she is not alone in her fight that makes it easier. Having Haruka, Setsuna and Hotaru to act with makes things easier. Usagi and the inner senshi are also important allies, though even after Neptune and the other outers begin cooperating with them, they are still not always on the same page. Neptune and her fellow outer senshi can often be very pragmatic, even if this leads to decisions that are not the kindest.

Maybe it is because of the isolation that the outer senshi initially existed in with their duties during the time of the Silver Millennium, but whatever the reason, Michiru seems to have a bit of difficulty coming to trust people. This is exceptionally noticeable both in the difficulties it takes the outer senshi to come to work fully with the inner senshi and later with their distrust and suspicion towards the Starlights. Truthfully though, this distrust is centered in a very strong desire and urge to protect that which is important and dear to her -- including Usagi and the other senshi as well as the planet/solarsystem/kingdom wherever they happen to be at the time.

Despite how serious Michiru can be, and how very adult she often acts, she is not a humorless girl at all. In fact, she's generally very cheerful, polite and well-mannered. She also has her silly side. Her sense of humor can be just a little on the dry side, and she does enjoy gently teasing those that she is closest with. She's very feminine and enjoys some very girly hobbies including make up and clothes. She is always quite put together in her civilian attire, a veritably fashion plate really. She also can be something of a flirt, but in all fairness, a lot of this flirting is particularly designed to make Haruka just a bit jealous. Just a bit. A little. A smidge. After all, turnabout is fair play. And it is nice to know that the object of one's affection is also paying attention.

Powers/Abilities:
Michiru is a sailor senshi. As such she possesses strength and stamina that surpasses normal people. She is quite used to fighting and battling and has proven to be quite resilient despite injury and difficulty sustained.

Beyond just this, being a senshi comes with a number of attacks and powers associated largely with the water element.

Her powers are as follows:
Current Transformation: Neptune Crystal Power Make Up - transforms Michiru into Sailor Neptune and gives her access to all her abilities as a senshi.

Attacks:
Deep Submerge: This is her first and arguably weakest attack. It sends a large sphere of energy (in the blue-green shape of the planet neptune) at an enemy. It seems to be water based, though oftentimes it is just the force of it that does the job.
Submarine Reflection: Using her Talisman, the Deep Aqua Mirror, this attack is also water based. It sends a wall of water at her enemies. It also can be used to reflect and reveal and enemy's weakness to help in battle.
Submarine Violin Tide: Using her violin, this attack harnesses energy in something of a wave that is used to attack whomever her target is.

Beyond her senshi powers, Michiru possesses several notable skills. Michiru is a poised, talented young woman. She's an accomplished musician and artist, and is somewhat well-known for these talents. She is also considered to carry herself quite well, and is quite notably good at most social graces. There's an elegance about her that many people remark on upon first meeting her.

Third person:
It had been too long since she'd spent enough time playing, Michiru mused to herself as she slowly plucked each string, turning the pegs carefully, listening to hear the tone as it fell into that perfect spot, like sinking slowly beneath the surface of still water in a series of perfect ripples. Satisfied with the tuning, she settled her chin onto the chinrest and her fingers began plying at the strings along the neck. The callouses on her fingertips had begun to fade a bit, but it was a pleasant sort of sting, that pressure. The first note sang out and she shut her eyes slowly.

Moments like this, it was almost easy to let thoughts of everything else slip her mind. Almost. Not all of it though, and she certainly wouldn't want to let it all slip away. There was too much to hold on to. Her duty, for one. Even in these quiet moments, when things were relatively peaceful, there was that voice at the back of her mind that whispered that the fight was not over. No. This was a lull. Nothing more than that. But that was all right.

More than all right.

It was the life she knew. A smile pulled over her lips as she drew her bow across the strings once more. She wouldn't give it up, any of it. It was impossible to consider this without certain faces coming to mind. Haruka. For so long she'd taken so much of her strength and resolve from the other woman's presence. It was a sentiment she didn't often put into words, maybe not as often as she should.

The music changed then, tempo quickening into a playful sort of melody. And of course, there was something that resonated deep inside her soul when it came to protecting the Princess. It was what she had been born and reborn to do, in the end, wasn't it? Having the other senshi there as well; it was still almost surprising how much it meant, to be a part of that.

Bow set aside, she plucked out a few notes with her fingers now, still the same lilting song, staccato now. She still remembered that stolen time, when her senshi uniform had been traded in for a more domestic sort of scene. When Hotaru had been a baby, when she and Haruka and Setsuna had lived a brief, fleeting shade of a normal life. It was a treasured memory, but she couldn't bring herself to regret that that had changed either. No, no regrets in that.

A smile was still settling on her face as she lowered the instrument. Fingertips brushed along burnished wood absently. This nostalgic mood, she wasn't entirely sure where it had come from. But it left her with a faint aching in her heart, not really pain, nothing she would dream of calling bad or unpleasant. Maybe instead it was a yearning, for things long gone and for things to come.
